Engineering: Build, Test & Discover
Suitable for ages 8+
A fun, hands-on introduction to how things work, designed especially for children aged 8 and above who enjoy building, experimenting and solving practical problems.
Across the programme, students will explore key engineering ideas through creative challenges using simple materials and real-world design thinking. They will investigate forces, movement, balance, strength, stability and mechanisms in an age-appropriate way, while learning how engineers test ideas, improve designs and solve problems through trial and error.
Each session encourages students to think creatively, work as a team and build confidence in sharing their ideas. They will be guided through the engineering process: exploring a problem, designing a solution, building a prototype, testing how well it works, making improvements and presenting their final outcome.
1. Forces & Structures Challenge
Students are introduced to basic forces such as pushing, pulling, bending, compression and tension. They will take part in a practical challenge to design and build a structure that can stay stable under pressure.
2. Bridges & Load Testing
Students explore how bridges are designed and why some shapes are stronger than others. They will build their own bridge using simple materials, then test how much weight it can hold before reviewing and improving their design.
3. Mechanisms & Moving Parts
Students discover how movement is created using simple mechanisms such as levers, wheels, axles, pivots and linkages. They will design and build a moving model or simple machine to understand how mechanical systems work.
4. Engineering Design Challenge
Students are given a real-world style design brief and challenged to come up with a practical solution. They will plan, sketch, build, test and refine their idea, developing problem-solving skills and learning how engineers adapt designs when things do not work first time.
5. Build, Test & Present
Students bring together everything they have learned to complete a final build challenge. They will test their design, make final improvements and present their finished project, explaining how it works and what they changed during the process.
By the end of the programme, students will have developed a stronger understanding of basic engineering principles, gained practical design and building experience, and improved their confidence in problem-solving, teamwork and communication.
