Teen Architecture Portfolio Studio
Suitable for teenagers interested in architecture, design and the built environment
Develop the creative, technical and presentation skills needed for future study and a career in architecture. Delivered in supportive small groups by an expert architecture tutor, the programme provides focused guidance tailored to each student’s interests, experience and future goals.
Throughout the week, students will build a portfolio project while exploring the architectural design process through research, sketching, model making, design development and professional presentation techniques. The programme is particularly suitable for students preparing for university, college or sixth-form applications, as well as those who want to explore architecture before deciding on their next steps.
Programme
Day 1: Architectural Design Fundamentals
Students are introduced to the architectural design process, from interpreting a brief and researching a site to developing and refining an original concept. They will analyse a range of buildings, architectural styles and designers to understand how purpose, place, materials and users influence design.
Day 2: Architectural Sketching and Visual Communication
Students develop architectural drawing and visual communication skills through perspective drawing, observational sketching and concept development. They will learn how architects use sketches, diagrams and presentation techniques to explain their ideas clearly.
Day 3: Model Making and Design Development
Students transform their two-dimensional ideas into professional architectural models. They will explore scale, materials, structure, form and spatial design while learning how physical models can be used to test and improve a concept.
Day 4: Portfolio Project
Students develop an original architectural concept in response to a creative design brief. They will produce drawings, models, plans and presentation boards that demonstrate their individual thinking and design process.
Day 5: Portfolio Presentation and University Preparation
Students complete and present their final portfolio project, explaining the inspiration and decisions behind their work. They will receive constructive feedback and practical guidance on building a strong portfolio for university, college or sixth-form applications, along with suggested next steps for pursuing architecture.
Small-group expert tuition
The programme is delivered in small groups, allowing students to receive individual guidance, detailed feedback and dedicated support from an experienced architecture tutor throughout the design process.
Materials and equipment
All specialist materials and equipment are provided, including drawing and model-making resources. Students will finish the programme with original work that can be photographed or included within their developing portfolio.
